Community Information

Various community groups, other government agencies and private providers provide support to school-aged children that may be disengaged or struggling with challenging and/or complex behaviours in school settings.

In the first instance, with parental consent, you should contact the child’s enrolled school, Schools Online Department of Education Western Australia (det.wa.edu.au), to discuss working together to enhance the child’s and their families contact with education.  If you feel that the relationship between the family and the school is detrimental to the student’s reengagement in education, you may like to contact the regional education office of the school, Contact – Department of Education.

The School of Special Educational Needs: Behaviour and Engagement (SSEN:BE) offers a continuum of services supporting schools and students across the state of Western Australia (WA).  WA public schools may request assistance from SSEN:BE for various intervention types, once they have exhausted all local/school/regional based supports.  SSEN:BE, in consultation with regions, other specialist schools and families, guarantee placement of excluded students.

SSEN:BE, through its Youth Transition Coordinators (YTC), support school-aged young people to transition out of custodial sentences into meaningful education and/or training pathways, including returning to mainstream public schools.  SSEN:BE further offers support to families of young people that appear in the Perth Children’s Court by building relationships and improving communication with families, the Student Support Officer at Banksia Hill Detention Centre and the wider YTC team.

SSEN:BE has an Aboriginal YTC who was appointed to ensure our practices, relating to young people on a custodial sentence, are culturally responsive. This role continues to expand to include partnerships with a range of services, including Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations and other community-based agencies, to enable a holistic approach to working with, and supporting, Aboriginal students and families.

If you have any queries regarding SSEN:BE’s service and how we might support a school-aged child you are working with, please contact the Manager on 9402 6200 or ssenbe.admin@education.wa.edu.au
